SAC Health Talk Series 2024

With the sponsorships of Gilead Science and GlaxoSmithKline plc, SAC Center held a health talk, focusing on understanding cardiovascular diseases and strokes. We were honored to invite Dr. Grace Lui, an honorary clinical associate professor from the Department of Infectious Diseases at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, as our guest speaker. She explained a detailed explanation of the risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, including the use of early ART regimens, smoking habits, obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, and declining kidney function. Additionally, Dr. Lui shared research findings indicating that the use of statins can effectively reverse the risks of cardiovascular diseases and strokes. Yet, people living with HIV/AIDS also need to manage HIV, diabetes, and cholesterol levels to protect their cardiovascular health.

Mental Health Education Workshop - " Understanding of Cognitive Impairment and Dementia"

“Together with Love – Mental Health Support Program” is supported by the Mental Health Projects Funding Scheme of the Health Bureau. It aims to enhance the awareness of mental health among elderly people living with HIV and their caregivers, as well as to increase their motivation to seek help. On 7 November, SAC Center held a health talk on the theme of " Understanding of Cognitive Impairment and Dementia ". We were honored to have Dr. Chan Wai-Chi, Clinical Associate Professor from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Hong Kong, as our guest speaker. He introduced various symptoms of cognitive impairment, including memory decline, affected concentration, decreased ability to perform daily tasks, reduced language skills, impaired social cognition, and behavioral issues stemming from emotional changes, such as agitation, violence, delusions, or hallucinations. Dr. Chan explained several diagnostic methods, such as PET scan, MRI, and cerebrospinal fluid testing, to identify different types of cognitive impairment. He also discussed targeted pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments to slow disease progression and improve quality of life. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of continuous learning, moderate exercise, maintaining social activities, healthy eating, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption to prevent and delay cognitive impairment.

We are honored to have Dr. Zee Sze Tsing Jonpaul, Honorary Consultant in Infectious Disease from the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital, to be our guest speaker sharing the information on latest HIV treatment development as well as target audience, benefits and side effects of long acting injection. In addition, Dr. See also introduced the updated trend on Streptococcus pneumoniae and Respiratory Syncytial Virus and the related vaccine, in which he encouraged the public to get vaccinated for protection.
